A 42-year-old woman instantly died Monday morning when the passenger van she was riding fell on a deep ravine along the national highway in Roxas town, in northern Palawan.
The first serious highway accident recorded in Palawan this year, reports to the Philippine News Agency (PNA) identified the fatality as Vivian Badidil, a worker of the Department of Social Welfare and Development’s (DSWD) Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) branch in Roxas town.
Another passenger of the shuttle van, interviewed by a local radio but was not identified, said they were on their way to Roxas when they already noticed something wrong with the vehicle while still in Barangay Salvacion in the outskirts of this city.
But the informant said the driver just kept on the gas pedal, and never took notice of what was wrong and the some malfunction in the shuttle van eventually veered them towards a deep ravine.
Aina Badidil, sister of the victim, said the accident happened in Barangay Caramay, Roxas town.
Badidil was reportedly in the front seat when the accident happened shortly before 8:00 a.m. Aina said her sister was on her way to report for work in Roxas with her 12-year-old daughter, Janiza.
To always ensure the safety of passengers, the victim’s family is now calling for traffic authorities to review policies on drivers and shuttle vans plying the route.
As of this writing, investigators are still on their way to the site of the accident. PNA
