AT LEAST one person was killed and ten others were reportedly injured following a powerful explosion that ripped through a KTV bar and massage parlor in Zamboanga City on Thursday evening, police re-ports said on Friday.
Officials said the powerful blast late Thursday killed Geraldine Miguel, 30, and damaged the Manly Massage Parlor along San Jose Road, just several blocks away from the main police headquarters.
Police and soldiers cordoned off the area to prevent civilians from getting near the site as members of the police bomb squad inspected the building. It was not immediately known what kind of explosive was used in the bombing.
“Debris were all over the place due to (the) IED explosion and according to the bomb squad, the blast occurred inside the Manly Massage Parlor,” Councilor Jerry Perez, who was at the site, said in a radio interview.
The police believe that the Abu Sayyaf Group is responsible for the bombing.
Senior Supt. Angelito Casimiro, disclosed the bandit group has threatened to stage attacks against government forces who are on rest and recreation in this city.
He said the attacks are in retaliation to the continuous law enforcement operations against the group in the province of Sulu.
Casimiro said they already warned the owners of night establishments and other public places to strengthen security measures.
Mayor Beng Climaco, meanwhile, has appealed to citizens to stay calm and vigilant and report to au-thorities suspicious persons and abandoned baggage in their community.
