• One killed, 18 trapped after Colombia mine explosion


    BOGOTA: An explosion on Friday at a central Colombian coal mine killed at least one person and trapped 18 others, according to authorities who said rescue efforts were underway. The blast occurred at a coal mine in the town of Cucunuba in Cundinamarca state, some 90 kilometers (55 miles) north of Bogota. Officials said they do not know what caused the explosion which also injured two people. “We are going to dig by hand throughout the night to try to rescue” the trapped workers, Wilson Garcia, director of the emergency response unit in Cundinamarca, told Agence France-Presse.
