BUTUAN CITY: A New People’s Army (NPA) rebel was killed during an encounter with Army soldiers in an outskirt village of Surigao City on Sunday morning, it was reported on Monday. According to Army reports, the troops of the 30th Infantry Battalion came upon about 20 heavily armed NPAs collecting their so-called revolutionary taxes in Brgy. Mabini, Surigao City at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday. Army spokesman Lt. Joe Patrick Martinez said that a concerned civilian tipped the Army about the presence of the NPAs in the area. The 30th IB sent its troops to the area, but as they are approaching the vicinity, they were first fired upon by the armed group, he said.
