One rebel dead and soldier wounded in encounter in Camarines Norte


A REBEL was killed and a soldier was wounded in an encounter between government troops and the New People’s Army (NPA) rebels before dawn on Saturday in a remote village in Camarines Norte province, police reports said.

Reports at the Philippine National Police (PNP) national operations center in Camp Crame said the encounter between government troops and rebels occurred at about 4:30 a.m. at Sitio Purok 3, Barangay Salvacion , Sta Elena, Camarines Norte. It added that troops from the 49th Infantry Battalion (IB) were conducting security patrol operation in the said area when they chanced upon seven armed rebels.

A firefight immediately ensued between the government forces and the rebels and resulted into the killing of one the rebels and the wounding of one soldier.

Reports identified the wounded soldier as Pfc. Edcil Bagaan but said that the identity of the deceased rebel is still unknown.

Polcie said  that the wounded soldier was airlifted to V. Luna Hospital in Quezon City, while troops are still conducting pursuit operation against the rebels.  ANTHONY VARGAS
