Only seven of the usual 20 Metro Rail Transit (MRT) 3 trains were operational to service the commuters, especially students, on the first day of school. This was disclosed by MRT General Manager Roman Buenafe noting that the problem was due to the busted air conditioning system of the train coaches. He said there are usually 20 trains that ply the EDSA route to serve about half a million passengers per day. Buenafe said that based on the contract of MRT 3 with maintenance provider APT Global, there must be 20 trains running on peak hours while 14 trains and above must be operational for non-peak hours to ensure efficient service to the riding public. He explained that based on protocol, coaches must always be in the best condition before deployment. As of press time, the MRT official has yet to determine the completion of maintenance works for the remaining train coaches.
