THE Philippine National Police’s (PNP) intensified campaign against illegal drugs – “Oplan Tokhang”– will continue even during the holiday season, PNP spokesman and Senior Supt. Dionardo Carlos told members of the media in Camp Crame in Quezon City on Wednesday. Carlos, however, said the decision of the PNP leadership to forego the taping of muzzles of firearms of police personnel has no connection with the intensified anti-illegal drugs campaign. Records of the PNP National Anti-Illegal Drug Monitoring Center showed that of 6 a.m. on December 14, a total of 2,102 drug suspects have been killed while 40,932 have been arrested in 38,913 anti-illegal drug operations conducted since July 1, 2016. The same data also showed that a total of 908,244 drug suspects had surrendered, of whom 837,396 were drug users and 70,848 pushers. A total of 19 police officers have been killed, while 55 others were wounded in police operations.
