FORMER world champion Dennis Orcollo copped a bronze medal in the prestigious 2013 World Games being held in Cali, Colombia.
Orcollo placed third in the men’s 9-ball event of the billiards and snooker competition held at the Bowling Coliseum in Unidad Deportiva Alberto Galindo.
The Filipino cue master outclassed Enrique Leopoldo Rojas Contreras of Chile in the first round, 11-3, then clobbered Marcus Chamat of Sweden in the next round, 11-2.
Orcollo, however, fell short against British Darren Appleton in the semifinals, 9-11, and was relegated to the battle-for-bronze match, where he defeated Chinese Liu Haitao, 11-5.
Appleton took the gold by outlasting Taiwanese Chang Jung-Lin, 11-10, in the finals.
The Philippines is looking to add more medals in bowling as Kenneth Chua sees action in the men’s tenpin event while Liza del Rosario competes in the women’s division. They will also participate in the mixed doubles event.
Overall, the Philippines is ranked 41st with one bronze while Italy is on top of the medal board with 15 golds, 13 silvers and 13 bronzes followed by Russia with 14 golds, 17 silvers and nine bronzes, and France with 12 golds, 10 silvers and nine bronzes. Germany is in fourth with 12-4-6, China in fifth with 8-5-1, United States in sixth with 8-1-4, Ukraine in seventh with 7-9-8, host Colombia in eighth with 5-5-6, Great Britain in ninth with 5-5-2 and Japan in 10th with 5-1-4.
