Former world champion Dennis Orcollo ruled the 9-Ball Banks Division of the 16th Annual Derby City Classic at the Horseshoe Southern Indiana Elizabeth in Indiana, US.
Orcollo outplayed fellow world titlist Francisco “Django” Bustamante, 3-1, in an all-Filipino championship showdown.
American Earl Strickland settled for third.
“Winning a tournament wherein you have to compete against the world’s best players is a very big accomplishment, and I’m very happy for this win,” said Orcollo, the reigning Asian Games and Southeast Asian Games champion in the 9-Ball event.
In the Bigfoot 10-Ball Challenge category, Bustamante fell short against American Shane Van Boening in the semifinals, 8-11.
Van Boening eventually took the crown by whipping Neils Feijen of the Netherlands in the finals, 11-7.
Orcollo, Lee Vann Corteza, Efren “Bata” Reyes and Carlo Biado also competed in the Bigfoot 10-Ball Challenge but faltered in the early rounds.
Recently, Orcollo dominated Darren Appleton of Great Britain in their The Action Report head-to-head match up that featured One Pocket (race to 7), 8-Ball (race to-30) and 10-Ball (race to 30). Orcollo pocketed $3,000 for winning the three-day event.
Orcollo and Corteza also received the President’s Award from the
Philippine Sportswriters Association for topping the World Cup of Pool in 2013.
