Filipino cue masters Dennis Orcollo and Alex Pagulayan dominated as they copped the top two places in the 2016 West Coast Challenge 10-Ball Championship held at the California Billiards in Fremont, Caifornia in US.
Orcollo, the 2011 World Pool 8-Ball Championship winner, posted a thrilling 2-0 win over the 2004 World Pool 9-Ball champion Pagulayan in the finals to pocket the top honors and the $5,000 champion’s prize.
The 38-year-old Pagulayan settled for the $3,000 consolation purse.
Pagulayan was actually undefeated in the elimination round to secure the first spot in the finals. He clobbered Delbert Wong in the first round, Rodney Morris in the second, Tony Chohan in the third, Bill Meacham in the quarterfinals and Jason Williams in the semifinals.
On the other hand, Orcollo scored victories over Alex Mason in the opening round and Robert Sheppard in the second then lost to fellow former world titlist Thosten Hohmann in the third round that relegated the Filipino cue master to the losers’ bracket.
Orcollo then mounted a comeback in the one-loss side, beating Amar Kang, Ramin Bakhtiari, Oscar Domingues, Ernesto Dominguez, Meacham, Hohmann and Williams to arrange a showdown with Pagulayan.
It was Orcollo’s eighth title this year.
He also ruled the 2016 Derby City Classic (DCC) 14.1 Challenge, 2016 Andy Mercer Memorial Championship, Sidepocket’s 9-Ball Open, Orcollo vs Ko Challenge Match, Break Room 8-Ball Classic, Midwest Billiards and Cue Expo Bigfoot 10-Ball and 4th Annual Cole Dickson 10-Ball.
