Former world champion Dennis Orcollo bagged his first title this year after ruling the 23rd Annual Super Billiards Expo Open 10-Ball Professional Players Championship held at the Greater Philadelphia Center in Oaks, Pennsylvania.
Orcollo, also a gold medalist in the Asian Games and Southeast Asian Games, posted a thrilling 13-12 win over Jayson Shaw of Great Britain in their championship showdown.
The 36-year-old Orcollo pocketed a whopping $10,000 top purse while Shaw got the $5,000 runner-up prize.
Last year’s titlist Shane Van Boening of US, who lost to Shaw in the semifinals, settled for third place for $2,500 consolation purse followed by another American Mike Dechaine, who earned $2,000.
Filipino Warren Kiamco reached the quarterfinals but bowed to Van Boening to pick the $1,750 fifth-place prize.
Orcollo made it to the finals by nipping Patrick Carosi, Danny Olson, Rodney Morris, Hall of Famer Johnny Archer and world champion Thorsten Hohmann.
Early this year, Orcollo placed third in the Smokin’ Aces Bar Box 9-Ball Open in Missouri then fourth in the Derby City Classic 9-Ball Division in Indiana.
Orcollo and Kiamco will be leading the national billiards and snooker team seeing action in the 2015 Southeast Asian Games in Singapore in June.
