Orion, First Solar form JV for PH solar ventures

ONE of the world’s biggest solar farm producers, OrionGroup International Inc., has tied up with American firm First Solar Inc. for possible solar energy ventures in the country.

OrionGroup said the joint venture — FSO Energy Solutions Inc. (FSO) — will realize solar energy projects in the commercial and industrial market space through power purchase agreements.

First Solar installed Topaz Solar Farm, a 550-megawatt (MW) facility in California, USA, dubbed as the world’s largest solar-powered farm facility. It secured a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) from Apple with the capacity to generate 130 MW situated in a 2,900-acre.

The California Flats Solar Project, currently the largest in the industry, provides clean energy to a commercial end-user.

“It is a privilege to work with First Solar who is a global leader with a successful track record over the years in photovoltaic (PV) solar systems,” said Engr. Rynor Jamandre, OrionGroup executive vice president.

He said the deal will strengthen the company’s market reach in the Philippines.

“We are here to capitalize on our strengths for the clients. They elevate the standards of PV installations and we embrace that same approach in the Philippines,” said Jamandre.

OrionGroup as an engineering company established solar solutions that have powered hotels, hospitals, golf courses, offices, factories and houses all over the country.

Its flexible financing solutions allow customers to own renewable energy systems without any down payments.

Through FSO, First Solar and OrionGroup will focus on providing large commercial and industrial customers with electricity through long-term agreements.

Jack Curtis, First Solar’s regional manager for Asia Pacific, welcomed the joint venture with OrionGroup.

“We are delighted to be collaborating with OrionGroup to address the demand of commercial and industrial consumers in the Philippines who are looking for an alternate energy source that is reliable, less volatile in price, and lower in cost,” said Curtis.

Curtis said this initiative will help to address the gap in demand-supply imbalance caused by various factors like grid supply, costly alternate diesel power and rising electricity costs.

A vertically integrated solar energy company with 10 gigawatts (GW) installed worldwide, First Solar brings international experience and established technology leadership to the partnership with OrionGroup.
