Ortega case petition launched

The family of murdered Palawan journalist, environmentalist and good governance activist Gerry Ortega is not giving up on the case as they continue to follow the developments of the investigation on the gruesome crime that happened in 2011.

On Friday, the family celebrated the 52nd birthday of Ortega in Puerto Princesa, Palawan and the highlight of the celebration was the launching of the Change.org petition.

The principal suspects of the murder are former Palawan Gov. Joel Reyes and his brother Mario, former mayor of Coron. The two have been in hiding right after they were implicated in the murder.

The petition addressed to the Supreme Court, Department of Justice (DOJ), and the Department of the Interior and Local Government stressed that “the continued failure to apprehend the suspects has placed the country’s law enforcement capability and the administration’s political will, in question.”

The petition letter of Ortega family has strongly lambasted the Aquino administration due to “the dismal failure of the justice system to prosecute the Reyes brothers.”

The family described the snail-paced action of the government as a clear “embarrassing testament to the notoriety the country has gained as one of the most dangerous places in the world for journalists.”

The petition further noted that “the Gerry Ortega murder case is one of the few cases of media killings in the Philippines that have material evidence directly linking the mastermind to the murder . . . But despite the evidence and public clamor, the Reyes brothers continue to evade justice to this day.”
