Former world champion Alex Pagulayan and Carlo Biado failed to advance in the 2016 World Pool-Billiard Association (WPA) World 9-Ball Championship held at the Al Arabi Sports Club Sports Club in Doha, Qatar.
Pagulayan, the 2004 champion, hurdled past Muhammad Bewi of Indonesia in the Last 16 (11-7) and Ko Ping Chung of Taiwan in the quarterfinals (11-10) but suffered a 4-11 defeat at the hands of Albin Ouschan of Austria in the semifinals.
“This is completely different than 2004. For some reason when I was younger I looked for this kind of situation. Now it looks like I’m trying to avoid the pressure. I just want to relax. But I love playing 9-ball again,” said Pagulayan in a statement.
Biado was not as lucky as well following a 9-11 loss to Chung in the Last 16.
Ouschan stunned veteran campaigner Shane Van Boening of US in the finals 6-13, to claim his first major crown and the $40,000 top purse.
Van Boening settled for $20,000.
The other Filipinos competed in the tournament were Dennis Orcollo, Johan Chua, Jeffrey Ignacio, Jeffrey De Luna, Warren Kiamco, Lee Vann Corteza, Roberto Gomez, Ramil Gallego, Antonio Gabica, Francisco Felicilda and Rogelio Sotero.
