Overstaying Viets surrender to BI

SOME 78 overstaying and undocumented Vietnamese have surrendered to the Bureau of Immigration (BI) and asked to be voluntarily deported to their country. Immigration Commissioner Jaime Morente said the foreigners turned themselves in last week after learning of the BI’s crackdown on illegal aliens in the country. Most of them overstayed in the country for more than two or three years while engaged in the buy and sell business in Metro Manila. Lawyer Ma. Antonette Mangrobang, BI spokesperson, said the Vietnamese were interviewed to ascertain their claim to indigency. Under BI rules, foreigners who are deported as indigents are blacklisted and banned from reentering the country.
