TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan: In a move to protect power facilities from typhoons in Batanes province, the electric cooperative here is switching to underground cables from overhead power lines.
Project engineer Donald Poncio of the Batanes Electric Cooperative (Batanelco) said that underground cables are more secured and can maintain a continuous power supply even during strong typhoons.
Poncio said the Batanelco project is in collaboration with Power Dimension Inc. (PDI) with the installation of the 28-kilometer underground power cable project which costs the cooperative some P141.6 million.
Batanelco is a non-profit coop in-charge of the province’s power distribution with a power plant which mainly depends on fuel to generate electricity.
“With this, Batanelco is expected to improve its supply of electricity and will minimize power interruption in the island province,” Poncio said.
