AUTHORITIES in Iloilo arrested two men and seized a truckload of endangered seashells worth P2.5 million during an operation in a remote village in Batad town.

Reports reaching Camp Crame over the weekend said the truck which came from Estancia town contained seashells that could fetch P1,500 a kilo in the international market.

The report said the two arrested were identified as Cipriano Ombrero and Rene Boy Rusiana – both residents of San Carlos City in Negros Occidental.

Ombrero and Rusiana told police they were asked by a certain Diosa Hechanova to transport 95 sacks of seashells to San Carlos City in Negros Occidental.

The two admitted that the contents of the sacks they were transporting are endangered seashells to be sold to China.

Authorities referred the matter to the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources for further investigation.
