The government has released about P5.46 billion for house-and-lot packages for the military, police, and other uniformed personnel in various regions of the country, the budget department announced on Thursday.
In a statement, the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) said the fund was released to the National Housing Authority for the construction of 20,000 house-and-lot packages for uniformed personnel.
The disbursement is expected to benefit personnel of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, Philippine National Police, Bureau of Fire Protection, Bureau of Jail Management and Penology, and the Bureau of Corrections. The fund was sourced from the Budgetary Support to Government Corporations under the 2014 General Appropriations Act, the DBM noted.
Of the released P5.46 billion, Regions IV-A and III will get the biggest shares of P1.77 billion and P1.64 billion for 6,500 and 6,000 housing units, respectively, it added.
“The fund release will go towards the construction of another 20,000 housing units this year, which will allow us to support more soldiers and police officers,” DBM Secretary Florencio Abad said.
Abad added that once the government has successfully built the houses, the total number of completed units will increase to 66,852. The housing program was started in 2011.
