P86M ‘weeds’ burned in Benguet


La Trinidad, Benguet: Despite the government campaign to eradicate the cultivation of marijuana plants in the province three municipalities of Kabayan, Kibungan and Bakun continue to propagate the regulated plants. In the first two months this year, authorities already torched over P86 million worth of marijuana in the highland region. The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) and local police swooped down on 17 plantation sites in sitio Tambor and Kolyang in Tacadang, Kibungan town and uprooted 18,375 pieces of fully-grown plants. Seized were 5,000 grams of dried marijuana leaves valued at P4,275,000. Last week, at least P45,244,000 marijuana plants, seedlings and dried stalks were also burned in various in Kibungan and Bakun towns during a six-day eradication operation in February. No cultivators were caught. Simultaneous marijuana haul yielded 231,210 plants, 20,900 seedlings and 110,000 grams of dried stalks in 81 plantation sites with estimated value of P45,244,000.
