Eight-division world boxing champion Manny Pacquiao will be hosting a World Pool-Billiards Association (WPA) ranking event scheduled on February 15 to 24 in General Santos City.
The 10-day event dubbed as Manny Pacquiao Cup will feature two events—singles and doubles —and is expected to draw huge names including legendary cue masters Efren “Bata” Reyes and Francisco “Django” Bustamante.
Pacquiao first hosted the Manny Pacquiao 10-Ball Cup in September with Thorsten Hohmann of Germany winning the singles, and Jeff De Luna and Jeffrey Ignacio ruling the doubles play.
Hohmann beat Roberto Gomez, 13-12, in the finals while De Luna and Ignacio scored an 11-6 upset win over early-favorite tandem of Hohmann and John Morra of Canada in their championship showdown.
In December, the second edition was staged with Reyes emerging the singles champion after outplaying unheralded Demosthenes Pulpul, 11-10, in the finals.
The Manny Pacquiao Cup serves as an opportunity for Filipino players to earn WPA ranking points.
So far, there are only three Filipinos in the Top 10 of the WPA ranking. Dennis Orcollo is in fifth, Carlo Biado in seventh and Johann Gonzales Chua in ninth.
Neils Feijien of the Netherlands is on top followed by Chang Yu Lung of Taiwan, Shane Van Boening of US and Li Hewen of China.
