UNITED States-based boxing radio show On The Ropes picked World Boxing Organization welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao as Fighter of the Year and Freddie Roach as Trainer of the Year.
On the Ropes gave the awards during its 227th live program.
Pacquiao posted impressive victories against Timothy Bradley in April and Chris Algieri in November.
“The real deciding factor in naming Manny Pacquiao our Fighter of the Year was he accomplished what no one else did during the calendar year, as Pacquiao secured a win over a top 5 pound-for-pound fighter, with his win over Timothy Bradley,” said Jenna J of On The Ropes.
“Bradley was not only coming off a terrific win over the dangerous Ruslan Provodnikov, but he also definitively beat Juan Manuel Marquez who had just come off a knockout win over Pacquiao. This factor separated Pacquiao from a close field that included Terence Crawford and Gennady Golovkin.”
Roach prepared Pacquiao against Bradley and Algieri. He also rekindled the boxing career of Miguel Cotto, who lost to Mayweather and Austin Trout. Under Roach’s tutelage, the Puerto Rican defeated Sergio Martinez in June.
Yahoo Sports also named Roach Trainer of the Year.
“Clearly, Roach made a major difference in both men, and for that, he’s the clear choice as the Yahoo Sports Trainer of the Year. He’s become a guru of sorts, and managers and promoters beg him to work with their fighters, particularly those who need a quick fix.
Roach is good at providing that, but he’s at his best when he gets a fighter and works with him over the long haul,” said Yahoo Sports’ Kevin Iole.
