FILIPINO ring icon Manny Pacquiao has bought an undisclosed number of shares in One Fighting Championship (One FC), Asia’s largest mixed martial arts (MMA) league according to One FC President Victor Cui.
“Pacquiao is truly a global sports icon and having him as a part of our organization as a shareholder and promoting One FC is really big for the sport in the region. It promotes awareness and growth,” Cui told The Manila Times via online interview.
Cui said that Pacquiao becomes interested to buy shares after learning that One FC holds a 90 percent market share in Asia. “He knows our organization and the brand itself is very strong in Asia.”
Besides Pacquiao, another Filipino boxer that is heavily involved with One FC is former women’s bantamweight world boxing champion Ana “The Hurricane” Julaton. Now also an MMA fighter, Julaton is scheduled to battle Malaysian Anne Osman in Dubai on August 29. Julaton thumped Egyptian kickboxer Aya Saeid Saber in her One FC debut in May.
Pacquiao has earlier expressed interest in MMA. In 2010, BoxingScene.com’s Bill Emes and Michael Marley asked Pacman if there is a possibility for him to compete in MMA and he replied: “I want to, but they [promoters and management]don’t want me to fight.”
