REIGNING World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao won’t be in action when expansion team Kia Sorento plays Barangay Ginebra on Saturday in the Philippine Basketball Association Philippine Cup in Lucena City.

Pacquiao’s business manager Eric Pineda confirmed to The Manila Times on Monday that the eight-division world boxing champion will skip Kia’s next game to focus on his preparation for his upcoming bout against unbeaten American Chris Algieri.

“He (Pacquiao) won’t play but maybe he’s just going to watch. I’m not sure but you know Manny if his schedule is okay, he’ll go there and watch,” Pineda said through phone interview.

“Pacquiao is now in General Santos to resume his training,” added Pineda.

Pacquiao, 35, the oldest rookie in the professional league, debuted with a win as Sorento overpowered Blackwater Elite (80-66) in Sunday’s opener at the Philippine Arena in Bocaue Bulacan.

Pacquiao will fight the defending WBO junior welterweight titleholder Algieri on November 23 in Macau, China.

“I can’t play until the end of November because of my upcoming fight,” Pacquiao (56-5-2 win-loss-draw card with 38 knockouts) told reporters during post-game interviews. “I don’t think of getting injured because I know God is always on my side.”

    1. Thank God for small favors. Can’t your absence from the court be forever? Manny, please spare yourself the disgrace of being the cause for the inevitable downgrading of the level of professionalism of our PBA players if you continue inserting yourself as a player, short and inconsequential your presence maybe, in the PBA. Your six-minute presence on the court during the opening games was enough sufferance for the paying 52 thousand or so basketball fans. Please give due respect to our true-blooded professional basketball players who were merely tolerating your player presence on the court. You maybe dragging their level of play to yours with the complacent view ” na sa PBA, kahit anong klase ang laro, pwede na”.
