REIGNING World Boxing Organization welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao
will most likely use the Antonio Margarito blueprint in his training for his upcoming fight against unbeaten American Chris Algieri, according to the Filipino ring icon’s business manager Eric Pineda.
“Everything is fine in training. His trainer Buboy Fernandez is currently facilitating a light training regimen for Manny. They will use the Margarito blueprint for preparation against Algieri,” Pineda told The Manila Times in a phone interview.
Pineda said that Pacquiao’s long time assistant chief trainer Fernandez is currently handling the champ’s light training while waiting for chief coach Freddie Roach’s arrival in General Santos.
Pacquiao’s light training is composed of running as well as bag and mitt work.
Pacquiao, 35, will fight the 30-year-old Algieri (20-0 record with eight knockouts) on November 22 at the Cotai Arena in Venetian Hotel in Macau, China.
“That’s okay since Algieri is tall and has a long a reach just like Margarito. Manny needs to move faster and head movement is also important,” Pineda explained. “But Margarito is more aggressive and has a counter-punch move compared to Algieri.”
Pacquiao (56-5-2 win-loss-draw record with 38 knockouts) gave the Mexican Margarito (38-8 card with 27 knockouts) a terrible beating and won via unanimous decision in their fight on November 2010 for the vacant World Boxing Council light middleweight belt.
Pineda added that Pacquiao is focusing more on his boxing training rather than his preparations as head coach of KIA Sorento, which will make their debut as one of the two expansion teams in the Philippine Basketball Association Season 40 on October 18.
“Manny’s assistant Glenn Capacio is reporting to him from time to time and so far the team is performing good in exhibition games,” said Pineda, also the team manager of KIA. “Manny is communicating with them.”
Pacquiao did not attend most of KIA’s practice sessions and exhibition games because they are in conflict with his boxing training schedule.
