Mahindra team manager Eric Pineda said that Senator Manny Pacquiao would not be playing for the Senate Defenders in the fifth season of UN Television (UNTV) Cup slated on Monday because of restrictions in his contract as playing coach of the Enforcers in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA).
“No, he (Pacquiao) is not playing there (UNTV Cup) because he is under contract with Mahindra in the PBA. He was already informed about it by Commissioner Chito Narvasa,” Pineda, also the business manager of Pacquiao, told The Manila Times in a phone interview on Saturday.
Pineda did not elaborate the provisions in Pacquiao’s contract but PBA Media Bureau Chief Willie Marcial offered an explanation. “If that (UNTV) Cup is a tournament, Manny Pacquiao is prohibited to play there since he is under the league’s UPC (Uniform Players Contract),” Marcial said in separate interview.
A UPC prohibits any PBA player from joining other tournaments.
“If that’s only an exhibition game or just one game, he could possibly play if his team will allow him,” added Marcial.
Competing in this year’s edition of the UNTV Cup, a popular basketball tournament, are defending champions Armed Forces of the Philippines Cavaliers, Philippine National Police Responders, Metro Manila Development Authority Blackwolves, National Housing Authority Builders, Bureau of Fire Protection Firefighters, Judiciary Magis, Malacañang Kamao, Government Service Insurance System Furies, House of Representatives Solons, Department of Justice Justice Boosters, Ombudsman Graftbusters, Bureau of Customs Transformers and the Senate Defenders.
