PAFI Resolution supporting the Philippine decision to raise the West Philippine Sea issue before the UNCLOS Arbitral Tribunal


WHEREAS, the unlawful and aggressive actions of China against the Philippines in the West Philippine Sea continue to this day;

WHEREAS, the Philippine Constitution mandates the state to protect its marine resources in its archipelagic waters, territorial sea, and exclusive economic zone;

WHEREAS, the country is currently facing challenges to this legal responsibility particularly in areas covered within its maritime jurisdiction or exclusive economic zone;

WHEREAS, the U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) provides means for peaceful settlement of disputes;

WHEREAS, President Benigno S. Aquino III was fulfilling his constitutional duty to protect Philippine maritime jurisdiction and entitlements in its exclusive economic zone by his decision to file an action before the Arbitral Tribunal under UNCLOS.

NOW, therefore, the Philippine Ambassadors Foundation, Inc. (PAFI) has resolved to express its full support for the Philippine decision to take the rules-based approach towards the peaceful resolution of the issues pertaining to the West Philippine Sea. It further resolved to call on China to refrain from further actions that tend to cause or increase tension in the area.
