ZAMBOANGA CITY: Two motorcycle gunmen strafed a house of a village chieftain in Pagadian City in the southern Philippine province of Zamboanga del Sur province, police said.
Police said the gunmen opened fire on the house of Ramon Polenzon, village chieftain of Datagan, and wounded the politician’s nephew, Hernani Polenzon. The gunmen escaped on two motorcycles after the shooting.
The victim was rushed to the Zamboanga del Sur Medical Center for gunshot wounds. Investigators have recovered at least 5 bullet shells fired from a .45-caliber pistol.
No individual or group claimed responsibility for the attack, but police said the strafing could be politically motivated. The attack occurred ahead of village elections this month.
Police also reported a grenade explosion at a village in Pagadian City. It said the blast occurred in the house of Alnasir Suhuri at Purok Talisay B in NJK Subdivision in the village of Cawit.
The grenade was lobbed in the garage of Suhuri’s house where it exploded. The blast damaged the facade of the house and a van parked inside the garage. Police investigators have recovered the grenade’s safety lever, pin and fuse. It said the attacker used an MK2 fragmentation grenade.
There was no report of casualties or injuries and police are still investigating who was behind the attack and its motive. The occupants of the house did not give any statement to the press about the attack. AL JACINTO
