ILOILO City: The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa)-Western Visayas will conduct the P59 million cloud seeding operations in more than 50,000 hectares of farmlands on April 3-15 in the provinces of Iloilo, Aklan, Antique, and in Negros Occidental which is now part of the Negros Island Region. Officer-in-charge, Engr. Oscar Tababa said the rains to be reproduced will be light to moderate to ensure that farm crops which do not need much water to thrive will not be damaged due to cloud seeding. El Niño is expected to last until end of April to middle of May 2016 and the provincial agriculture office admitted that rice production in Iloilo is down by more that 50 percent. Iloilo province, considered as the rice granary of Western Visayas, has a total 130,000 hectares devoted to rice production in irrigated and rainfed areas.
