Former Filipino world champions Alex Pagulayan and Dennis Orcollo completed a 1-2 finish in the 2016 Midwest Billiards and Cue Expo One-Pocket Championship held at the Big Dog Billiards in De Moines in Iowa, US.
Orcollo, the 2011 WPA World Eight-Ball champion, was undefeated in the double-elimination tournament, scoring victories over Americans 2015 tournament champion Scott Frost, Josh Roberts, Shane Van Boening and compatriot Francisco Bustamante to secure the first finals slot.
The 2004 WPA World Nine-Ball titlist Pagulayan, on the other hand, earned the last ticket in the finals by subduing Frost, Van Boening, Bustamante, Jesse Bowman, Jeremy Jones and Corey Deuel in the one-loss side.
For reaching the finals unbeaten, Orcollo got a twice-to beat advantage in the championship round.
But it’s not a problem for Pagulayan as he posted a 5-3 win in the first game and a smashing 5-0 victory in the second game to claim the top honors.
Pagulayan took home the $14,000 top purse while Orcollo bagged the $10,800 consolation purse.
Bustamante grabbed the third-place honors for $7,200 and Jones gained the fourth place for $3,600.
It was Pagulayan’s fifth title this year after topping the 2016 Derby City Classic (DCC) Master of the Table, DCC One-Pocket Division, 2016 Canadian Open 9-Ball and the Don Coates Memorial One Pocket.
