Malacanang on Tuesday defended the high cost of protecting alleged pork barrel scam mastermind Janet Napoles, saying the government is just following court orders.
The Philippine National Police (PNP) said the government spends about P120,000 every time Napoles travels from her detention cell in Laguna to Metro Manila.
On Wednesday, Napoles had a medical check-up at the PNP General Hospital in Camp Crame.
Palace deputy spokesman Abigail Valte said the PNP was just following the ruling of the court to provide security for Napoles.
She said Napoles is a “high-risk detainee” who requires tight security.
“Unfortunately those are the attendant costs that come with having a high-risk detainee. And until such time, we will be constrained to provide the same security to her because of the threats and because of her involvement in such a high profile case,” Valte said.
She said the Makati Regional Trial Court ordered Napoles detained at Fort Sto. Domingo in Santa Rosa. The court also ordered that she be brought to the PNP General Hospital.
“The PNP’s was tasked to provide security,” Valte said.
Napoles, a central figure in the P10-billion pork barrel scam, is facing plunder charges before the Office of the Ombudsman.
She is detained at the Special Action Forces facility in Fort Sto. Domingo on another charge, serious illegal detention.
