Malacañang on Monday justified the presence of President Benigno Aquino 3rd in a shopping mall in Quezon City that was robbed on Sunday evening.
Reports earlier said that Aquino and Interior Secretary Manuel Roxas 2nd “immediately” went to SM City North Edsa after members of the notorious criminal gang tried to rob a jewelry store.
Philippine National Police (PNP chief Director General Alan Purisima also arrived at the mall earlier to investigate the incident.
Speaking to reporters, Palace spokesman Edwin Lacierda explained that the President only showed up to check the situation and also to ensure that “proper investigation”will take place.
“Well, he decided to [went there]to see what the circumstances in the heist in SM North and to also ensure that there will be a proper investigation,” Lacierda said
“So, he spoke to Chief Purisima and also I believe to DILG Secretary Mar Roxas, who was also there, subsequently,” he added
Meanwhile, Lacierda assured the public the PNP knows what to do to ensure peace and order, following Sunday’s robbery incident.
He said that there were no fresh instructions from the President, but noted that the PNP is “fully aware” of the possibility of criminals exploiting the holiday shopping rush to strike.
“Enforcement measures, they’ve taken this as part of their duty [during the]holiday season,” Lacierda added. CATHERINE VALENTE
