Malacañang on Friday said that it has no authority to decide if Janet Lim-Napoles need to be transferred to a regular jail.
Speaking to reporters, Presidential Communciations Secretary Herminio Coloma said only the court, which has jurisdiction over Napoles, can decide on her fate.
“Ang tamang lugar na kung saan siya dapat ay nasa hurisdiksyon na ng Regional Trial Court of Makati [It was up to the Regional Trial Court of Makati to decide where Napoles should remain detained],” Coloma said.
“Kaya bilang mambabatas, nauunawaan nila na iyong hukuman ang mayroong tamang hurisdiksyon at pagpapasya hinggil dito [So as legislators, they understand that only the court has jurisdiction over Napoles],” he added.
Coloma issued the statement when sought to react to a lawmaker’s call on the government to transfer Napoles to a regular jail “because her alleged crime of illegal detention definitely does not warrant special treatment.”
Napoles is currently detained at Fort Sto. Domingo in Sta. Rosa, Laguna for serious illegal detention of her cousin and whistle-blower Benhur Luy. CATHERINE S. VALENTE
