Malacañang on Thursday belied Ilocos Norte Rep. Imelda Marcos’ claim that President Benigno Aquino3rd’s treatment of former President and now Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo is “unjust and inhuman.”
Speaking to reporters, Presidential Communications Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. maintained that Aquino has no “ill will” against the former President but cannot interfere in cases pending the court.
“President Aquino holds no ill will towards former President Arroyo,” Coloma said, citing that the Sandiganbayan has jurisdiction over her “hospital confinement.”
“Her hospital confinement at the Veteran’s Memorial Medical Center is by order of the court in recognition of her medical condition,” he added
Arroyo is under hospital arrest for charges of plunder in connection with the alleged misuse of the intelligence funds of the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office. She was also facing charges of electoral sabotage and graft.
Earlier, Malacanang ruled out any imminent visit of President Aquino to his predecessor at the hospital, saying it was no longer necessary. Two former presidents and other personalities have visited the ailing former leader at the hospital during the holidays. CATHERINE S. VALENTE
