Palarong Pambansa standout Jose Jerry Belibestre bagged the lone gold medal of the country in the 10th Southeast Asia Youth Athletic Championships held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The 17-year-old Belibestre, a silver medalist in the 2014 Asean School Games in Manila, registered 6.93 meters to dominate the boys’ long jump event.
He defeated Andre Anuar of Malaysia (6.73m) and Wasan Kammak of Thailand (6.68), who settled for silver and bronze, respectively.
Another Filipino bet Alexis Soqueno secured a silver in the boys’ 400m hurdles by checking in at 54.50 seconds.
Soqueno, however, was not as lucky in the two more events he competed. He placed sixth in the 110m hurdles after submitting 14.95 seconds. Phanuwat Kwanyuen of Thailand (14.29), Irwan Suadi of Indonesia (14.34) and Marcel Tan Yann Guang of Singapore (14.46) were the podium finishers.
Soqueno wound up fifth in high jump following his 1.87-meter showing. Muhamad Syazwan Ahmad of Malaysia (2.06) topped the event followed by Vu Duc Anh of Vietnam (1.99) and Saksit Sittichai of Thailand (1.96).
Recently, the national track and field squad earned six gold medals in the 77th Singapore Open Track and Field Championships held at the Singapore Sports Hub.
