WE have reason to be proud because Palawan has been dubbed the “Most beautiful island in the world,” in an article which appeared in a United States magazine recently, that focus on sheer perfection as a travel destination. Being a Palaweño, I am doubly proud because Palawan boasts of 80% increase in foreign tourists and visitors. Employment rate in our province also increased – 163,000 jobs from 2005 to the present. And although Palawan has not been spared of NPA attacks like burning, landmines, robberies and extortion, life and development is moving in our place.
This is because the government, the local government, the military and the people themselves worked together to fight these elements. There are several pro-people programs, like local integration program that provide livelihood, financial, education and training assistance that have NPA members in mind, if they wish to surrender and start living like ordinary people. Also Local Government Units and NGOs work closely in conducting medical and dental assistance as well as other needed services to our populace. Our province has been declared a “Conflict Manageable Area”, and a “Zone of Sustained Peace, Development and Prosperity” in a manifesto recently signed by the military based there, Palawan LGU and other public and private sectors.
Palawan is going great guns because of the involvement of everyone. This could be re-echoed nationwide.
