CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, PAMPANGA: Despite of the gloomy weather over the weekend, thousands of local and foreign tourists, flocked the annual Giant Lantern Festival held in one of the malls here to witness the showdown of kaleidoscope of colors dancing over the tune of Christmas carols. Barangay Dolores emerged the champion this year, its second grand title, and brought home P150,000. Followed by Brgy. Del Pilar for second prize with P100,000; Brgy. Sindalan, third with P75,000 and Calulut, P50,000. Other participants were barangays Sto. Niño; Telabastagan; San Jose; San Juan; San Nicolas; Sta. Lucia; and new competitors barangays Pandaras and Sindalan that won third prize. Mayor Edwin D. Santiago said that of all the symbols of the Yuletide Season, Parul or Lantern has become the symbol that makes Christmas distinctly Fernandino and Filipino. These larger than life lanterns, standing 20 feet in size, will brightly shine in spectacular colors until January next year and are expected to gather million viewers from different regions of the country.
