The first ‘teleserye’ on Philippine TV returns to ABS-CBN
Fifteen years after the nation was gripped night after a night by a story of endless love, promises and broken vows, the phenomenal ABS-CBN drama series Pangako Sa’Yo is making a grand comeback on prime time TV.

Now a considered a classic, the Olivia Lamasan masterpiece—which effectively became the precursor of fast-paced, multi-story lined, and elaborately filmed drama offerings on Philippine television—will bring the well-loved characters of Eduardo, Amor, Claudia, Angelo, and Yna back to life in an updated version that is more attune with the times.

Famously portrayed in the original by Tonton Gutierrez, Eula Valdez, Jean Garcia, Jericho Rosales and Kristine Hermosa, respectively, the 2015 version of Pangako Sa’Yo (PSY) has been given an equally compelling cast in Ian Veneracion, Jodi Sta. Maria, Angelica Panganiban, and today’s hottest love team, Daniel Padilla and Kathryn Bernardo.

With Lamasan still at the helm of this revival, she said at the show’s press launch this week, “Pangako Sa’Yo is considered the first teleserye on Philippine TV. Tinutukan siya hindi lang ng milyong milyong Pilipino ngunit pati na rin ng iba’t ibang nasyonalidad kung saan isinalin siya sa iba’t ibang lenguahe. For all this, we owe it to the new generation to experience this great Filipino love story.”

Co-directing the remake with fellow noted directors Rory Quintos and Dado Lumibao, Lamasan promises that while parts of the story have been updated to relate to the sensibilities of today—from the language, to specific details such as cell phones and the like—PSY will delve even deeper into the personas and emotions of its five main characters.

“There is so much more to learn about them even as they had already gripped the Filipino audience in such a phenomenal way in the past,” she explained. “And we will tell their story in even more elaborate locations than before, while keeping the most iconic scenes of the original very much in production.”

PSY’s young leads, Daniel and Kathryn were only four years old when the teleserye premiered in 2000. Nevertheless, they have a recollection of just how popular the series was even in their own homes.

Pangako Sa’yo revolves around the promise of love between a simple yet beautiful girl named Amor (Jodi), and a young man named Eduardo (Ian), who grew up in a wealthy family. Eduardo’s family disproves of their relationship, and because of a business transaction, forces him to leave his greatest love and marry the woman his mother chooses for him in Claudia (Angelica).

After many years, fate and love will test Eduardo and Claudia’ son Angelo (Daniel) when he faces the same fate as his father upon falling in love with a simple young woman named Yna (Kathryn).

At the beginning of the millennium, Pangako Sa’yo changed the history of Philippine television not only as the first teleserye in the country, but also the first ever Filipino drama series to conquer and make waves around the world. It gained high popularity in more than 20 countries, including China, Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia. Cambodian Television Network (CTN) even bought its format from ABS-CBN in 2012 and created a localized version of the show.

Pangako Sa’yo’s remake is under the production of hit maker Star Creatives (Maging Sino Ka Man, Magkaribal, Lobo, Imortal, Princess and I, Got to Believe, Bridges of Love, and Forevermore). It premieres on May 25 on ABS-CBN Primetime Bida.
