Pangasinan publisher shot; two apprehended

Two of the three suspects were arrested following a gun attack on a newspaper publisher in Pangasinan province on Tuesday.

Jaime Aquino, the publisher of local newspaper, Northern Star, was shot at 7 a.m. on Tuesday in Barangay Minien West in Santa Barbara town in Pangasinan.

The publisher was shot in the back, the bullet going through his body. He is currently in stable condition.

The state-run Philippine News Agency (PNA) reported that the police identified the names of the two arrested as William Parazo Garcia, 27, of Barangay Nanda-can, Bautista, Pangasinan; and Jerry Aquino, 42, of Barangay Luyan, Mapandan.

The report added that provincial Gov. Amado Espino Jr. and Rep. Jesus Celeste, and Aquino, were co-respondents in a complaint lodged by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) before the Department of Justice, in relation to the murder of Mayor Rupert Mar-tinez of Infanta on December 12, 2012. |

A 9mm pistol was found inside Aquino’s vehicle, and its ownership is now being investigated, according to local police.
