A town mayor and two of his three escorts were killed after they were attacked by a group of unidentified armed men early Saturday in a remote village in Pangasinan, police reports said.
Philippine National Police spokesman Senior Supt. Wilben Mayor identified the victim as Ernesto Balolong, mayor of Urbiztondo in Pangasinan.
Also killed in the attack were the mayor’s escorts, PO1 Eliseo Ulanday and Edmund Meneses.
Pangasinan Gov. Amado Espi–no Jr. condemned the slay in the strongest terms possible and ordered concerned agencies to get to the bottom of the crime.
“Absolutely, no one in any way would benefit from the crime except those with distorted values and deranged minds,” said Espino, in a statement.
Espino found it ironic that the cold-blooded killing happened just a day after he convened the provincial peace and order council to further discuss various measures to further ensure the safety of the people of Pangasinan.
Mayor said the attack occured at about 9:15 a.m. in Urbiz–tondo, Pangasinan.
The mayor and his two police escorts were declared dead on arrival (DOA) by attending physicians at VMU hospital where they were taken after the attack.
The victims were on a van when they were attacked by armed men on a gray Innova van with a YB6600 license plate.
The three victims were reportedly about to inspect the venue of Balolong ‘s wedding anniversary site when the attacked occurred.
The reports added that a certain Rex Ferrer belonging to the mayor’s group is undergoing treatment at the hospital.
The suspects’ getaway vehicle was recovered at Brgy. Caoayan Kiling in San Carlos City also in Pangasinan.
