PUBLIC Attorney’s Office chief lawyer Persida Rueda-Acosta on Wednesday expressed support for the revival of the death penalty being championed by incoming President Rodrigo Duterte.
Acosta said that in the past, she was against the killing of criminals, but stressed that she is now changing her stand on the death penalty as she boldly declared that she will support it if imposed properly and justly.
“Sa ngayon, pabor na po ako sa death penalty sa mga heinous crimes like rape with homicide, kidnapping with murder, and drug trafficking [As of now, I am in favor of the death penalty for heinous crimes like like rape with homicide, kidnapping with murder, and drug trafficking],” she told reporters at the weekly Fernandina Media Forum at Club Filipino in Greenhills, San Juan City (Metro Manila).
Acosta, however, assured the public that they will keep a close eye to make sure that only true criminals will be executed publicly.
Duterte earlier said that he wants to impose the death penalty by hanging.
His choice for House Speaker, Rep. Pantaleon “Bebot” Alvarez of Davao del Norte, said the return of the death penalty will be among the priority measures of the 17th Congress once it starts this July.
