The Powerlifting Association of the Philippines (PAP) has named four athletes for the 2016 World Classic Powerlifting Championship to be held in June at the Killeen Civic and Conference Center in Houston, Texas.
Two-time Asian Powerlifting champion and Asian record holder Joan Masangkay will be leading the team along with 2015 Asian Champion Jeremy Reign Bautista, World Championship bronze winner Leslie Evangelista and Veronica Ompod.
“These are the best lifters in their respective weight classes in the country. We are optimistic of our chances and we’re looking forward to bringing home gold medals in this tournament,” said PAP official Nina Oca.
Masangkay will participate in the -43-kg. weight class sub-junior division while Bautista competes in the 52-kg. weight class sub-junior, Evangelista sees action in the 55-kg. weight class sub-junior, and Ompod takes part in the 43kg weight class sub-junior.
Masangkay owns the Asian record of 217.5 kgs on 82.5 kgs. in squat, 35 kgs. in bench press and 100 kgs. in deadlift – way better than world champion Russian Volynskaia Olga’s 220 kgs. (72.5 kgs. in squat, 50 kgs. in bench press and 97.5 kgs. in deadlift.
Also gunning for gold is Ompod who has a 227.5 kgs. mark (85 kgs. in squat, 42.5 kgs. in bench press and 100 kgs. in deadlift).
