Party-list group defies TRO on contraceptives

Party-list group Akbayan has defended the rights of women to access all kinds of family planning methods against anti-Reproductive Health (RH) groups that had secured a temporary restraining order (TRO) from the Supreme Court (SC).

In a forum on Thursday, the Akbayan Women’s Committee said the SC’s TRO prohibits the Department of Health from procuring and distributing Implanon, a contraceptive that is implanted into a woman’s arm and is effective for three years.

“By getting a TRO from the Supreme Court against implanon, the anti-RH groups are violating the rights of poor women to ensure the health and well-being of their families.

This is particularly crucial for poor women who have limited resources yet have growing families,” Akbayan Rep. Angelina Ludovice Katoh said.

Akbayan woman members from Quezon City and Manila expressed difficulty in raising families in poverty and appealed to the SC to support women’s rights on the matter.

Meanwhile, Akbayan party-list group Rep. Risa Hontiveros, in a statement also on Thursday, said there is an unnecessary delay in making healthcare universal.

Also a PhilHealth director, Hontiveros called on the government, in the interest of universal healthcare, to appeal the TRO.

Each day that the TRO is in effect, she said, “the lives of women are sacrificed.”
Hontiveros also called the Supreme Court “to take the side of women and ensure our right to choose options regarding family planning.”
