Pasay court allows Arroyo to travel abroad

A Pasay City Regional Trial Court on Thursday allowed Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to travel to three countries in Asia for vacation and official business.

Judge Jesus Mupas of the Pasay City Regional Trial Court Branch 112 granted Arroyo’s request to travel to
Japan, Hong Kong and Myanmar from December 26, 2017 to January 12, 2018 after the defense counsel submitted a “very urgent supplemental motion for leave to travel abroad.”

Arroyo will be travelling to Japan and Hong Kong with family, and she will be visiting Myanmar to fulfill a promise to send skilled workers to the country.

The former president’s camp has already posted a P700,000 travel bond, which will be given back upon her return to Philippines.

The Department of Justice did not oppose the motion from Arroyo.|

To recall, Arroyo’s counsel Ferdinand Topacio submitted in November 2017 a motion to allow her to travel abroad three months after the Sandiganbayan dismissed the graft case against Arroyo over the botched national broadband project deal with Chinese firm ZTE Corp.

In July 2016, the Supreme Court, voting 11-4, acquitted Arroyo of plunder charges in Sandiganbayan involving the misuse of the P366-million intelligence fund of the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office.
