Green Archers United FC goalkeeper Paolo Pascual shone as he foiled a Kaya FC comeback to ensure a 2-0 win for his club on Wednesday.
Pascual, a vital cog in the defense of the Green Archers, had 11 saves out of the 15 shots on goal by Kaya.
“I just really wanted to win with a clean sheet. My teammates became a bit tired already so I really had to step up,” said the 24-year old Cebuano on his crucial stops in the final minutes of regulation.
The first choice shot-stopper of the Green Archers added he did not expect to have a clean sheet against Kaya FC, but reiterated the steady defense of their back-line played an important role in their win.
“I’m very surprised. Kaya is a very good team. But I’m thankful for our defense because I think they did well,” he added.
The Archers are now on a roll after winning two games in a row since the start of the second round of games of the United Football League.
During the match, the players of Rodolfo Alicante took the early lead against their rivals as a long distance shot from way beyond the box by Robert Cañedo connected in the 25th minute.
Another goal was tallied for the Archers in the 36th minute after Robert Lopez Mendy’s conversion from the penalty spot.
Kaya came back in the second half with more vigor in their offense but their disorganized attacks were checked by Pascual.
Meanwhile, Far Eastern University (FEU) football star Eric Giganto scored a brace to power Manila Jeepney FC to a 3-2 win against Stallion FC.
The Los Manileños, composed mostly of FEU standouts, notched an upset against their tough opponent on Manila day following two goals by Giganto in the 10th and 72nd minutes.
Koffi Kouassi also etched his name on Jeepney’s win after locating the back of the net in the 15th minute.
Higher ranked Stallion FC searched for a spark on their side but was only rewarded by two goals, one by Jordan Mintah in the 30th and another Ruben Doctora in stoppage time, before the end of regulation.
