Passage of IPRA law hailed

BAGUIO City: The passage of Republic Act 8371 or the Indigenous Peoples Rights Act (IPRA) of 1997 is necessary to correct historical injustice, fulfill constitutional mandate and observe international standards.

Thus stated former National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) – Cordillera Officer-in-Charge Atty. John Ray Libiran during an information education campaign in line with the celebration of the Indigenous Peoples Month.

He said the IPRA recognizes, protects and promotes the rights of Indigenous Cultural Communities (ICCs) and Indigenous Peoples (IPs) and corrected historical injustice as such for the longest time the rights of IPs have been trampled upon because there is simply no law that they can invoke to get redress for the grievances on them.
