More than 1,000 tracksters will be vying for honors in the 2016 Philippine National Open Invitational Athletics Championship beginning today at the PhilSports track oval in Pasig City.
The three-day meet organized by the Philippine Track and Field Association (PATAFA) will pit the national athletics team against local competitors as well as bets from neighboring Asian countries including South Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Guam, Brunei and Mongolia.
Eric Cray, Caleb Stuart and Donovant Arriola will lead the PATAFA contingent.
Cray, who will be seeing action in the 100-meter and 400m dash ranks 38th in the world, while Stuart is a hammer throw record holder in the 2015 Southeast Asian Games.
Besides Cray and Stuart, the other PATAFA standouts include Marestella Torres, Ernest John Obiena and Christopher Ulboc.
Competitions start at 6 a.m. and will have a six-hour mid-day break before resuming at 4 p.m.
The break, in accordance with international conventional practice, is to give competitors and technical officials a respite from the extreme summer heat.
