Filipino Jeson Patrombon and Chinese partner Wang Aoran copped the runner-up trophy in the 2016 International Tennis Federation (ITF) China Futures 5 held at the Taizhou Sports Center Tennis Center in Zhejiang Province in China.
The unseeded pair of Patrombon and Wang scored three straight victories against veteran opponents in the early rounds until top seeds Vijay Sundar Prashanth of India and Christopher Rungkat of Indonesia toppled them in the final round via a 6-4, 6-0 decision.
Patrombon and Wang reached the championship round by ousting Japan’s Issei Okamura and Kento Takeuchi in the first round, 6-2, 6-3; third picks Sriram Balaji of India and Shuichi Sekiguchi of Japan in the quarterfinals, 0-6, 6-4, 11-9; and China’s Te Rigele and Wang Chuhan in the semifinals, 6-1, 7-5.
In singles, Patrombon, a former Australian Open juniors quarterfinalist, needed to win two matches in the qualifying round to earn a ticket to the main draw. He defeated He Xiaoyu of China, 6-1, 6-0, and Xu Shuai of China, 6-0, 6-1.
In the knockout stage, Patrombon stunned Taiwanese Yu Cheng-Yu in the opening round, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, but fell short against the seventh-seeded Prashanth in the second round, 1-6, 1-6.
The 23-year-old Patrombon will be campaigning next in the ITF India Futures in Jassowal.
He was part of the Davis Cup team that won against Kuwait in the Asia-Oceania Group II tie in March.
Patrombon nailed two of the five victories of the Philippines in the tie. He defeated Alawadhi Abdulrahman in the first singles, 6-0, 6-2, 6-1, and Mubarak Abdulhamid in the reverse singles, 7-6 (5), 6-3.
