Growing up in Baguio City, ABS-CBN actor Paulo Avelino knew very early on that acting is his calling.
He set foot in showbiz via GMA Network’s Star Struck Season 4, thereafter working on a few projects at the studio, and eventually moving to ABS-CBN in 2011 to reinvent himself as a serious dramatic actor.
One of his notable and breakthrough roles was in the teleserye Walang Hanggan, where he was the main antagonist in a love story between Coco Martin and Julia Montes.
This was followed by a string of lead roles in other primetime soaps, among them, Sana Bukas Pa Ang Kahapon, Kahit Konting Pagtingin, Bridges Of Love, and On The Wings Of Love.
Avelino also took on the big screen successfully, earning his first award as Gawad Urian Best Actor for his role as a bisexual in the 2011 Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival entry Ang Sayaw Ng Dalawang Kaliwang Paa.
Through his thriving career, Avelino makes sure he presents himself properly groomed—even in character—to his audience.
Said the 28-year-old heartthrob, who is noted for his good looks and on point fashion sense, “I always want to live out my character—imagining how I’d look, from my hair to my clothes, to fit in with my acting. I try to constantly change my look depending on my character and I very much enjoy it.”
Granting an interview at the launch of Stylex Styling Gel at the upscale barbershop and haberdashery, Felipe & Sons in El Pueblo, Ortigas Center, the actor also generously shared his grooming essentials.
The Avelino look
Personifying a confident and stylish male—but both accessible and relatable—Avelino is easily admired by women and emulated by men his age.
For those who want to get his look, he willingly imparted, “It is always good to match your hairstyle with what you wear. When I wear a suit, I always wanted to make myself look professional and clean. I love to get experimental too in less formal occasions. And also, [using]scents is very important when it comes to my grooming practices.”
On a daily basis, Avelino describes his as very casual. He only uses light products on his hair like gel for a defined yet easygoing style.
“When it comes to clothes I just usually wear a plain black or white shirt with jeans, and any rubber shoes I pick from rack. That’s it. For me, that’s what bringing out your swag is all about. Putting something on and just totally forgetting about it,” Avelino told The Manila Times.
On days he needn’t be an actor or celebrity, he stays away from experimenting on his style.
“In our line of work, we always have to try out different styles; so when it’s my ‘me day,’ I just want to be as comfortable as I can,” he added.
Finally, the FPJ Ang Probinsyano standout adviced, “The only tip I want to give is just to go for whatever style you want and not be to mindful about it.
“Sometimes you get too conscious about how people see you but when you just forget about it and be as comfortable as you can be, that’s when I think you get to bring out your confidence. I guarantee, people will see that.”
