The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) on Wednesday imposed a
P100,000 fine and one-game suspension on Rain or Shine head coach
Yeng Guiao for an obscene gesture in a game Monday.
PBA Commissioner Chito Salud on Wednesday met with Guiao, who pointed a dirty finger towards the commissioner’s and technical officials table during Game 4 of the best-of-seven semifinal series between Rain or Shine and Petron Blaze.
Salud said the gesture was “conduct unbecoming of a coach exhibited in a manner positively indicating disrespect, if not disdain or scorn, for the PBA as an institution and its fans.”
Guiao, who was slapped two technical fouls in the same game that caused his
ejection, was also banished from the court in Game 3 last Saturday for a similar offense.
The Elasto Painters won Game 1 (103-95) on Jan. 27 and Game 2
(103-94) on Jan. 29, but they lost Game 3 (73-106).
They bounced back with an 88-83 victory in Game 4 to lead the series.
“I would like to state unequivocally that this disciplinary sanction can not fully convey the sense of regret of this office for insulting and unsavory antics. Coach Guiao continues to display and foist on the players, the referees, his peers and the entire viewing public of the PBA, especially the youth, despite repeated well-meaning advice and counsel from this Office in the past,” Salud said.
Guiao will not be in Rain or Shine’s bench when it plays Petron in Game 5 on Friday at the Araneta Coliseum.
“I reiterate that the PBA will fulfill its own responsibility to tirelessly uphold the principles of decency and sportsmanship,” Salud said.
