ALASKA guns for a finals spot while Rain or Shine hopes to extend the series to a do-or-die battle when they collide in Game 6 best-of-seven series of the Philippine Basketball Association Season 40 Philippine Cup semifinals at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City at 5 p.m. today.
The Alaska Aces, under American coach Alex Compton, inch closer to their 27th finals appearance after securing a 3-2 lead in the semifinals in December when they beat Rain or Shine Elasto Painters, 93-88, in Game 5.
Alaska’s Calvin Abueva and guard Cyrus Baguio, who posted a combined 32 points, joined forces in Game 5 to power the team in overcoming a 19-point deficit and win. In Game 6, Alaska is expected to sustain its momentum to book a duel with early finalist San Miguel Beer.
San Miguel Beer swept Talk ‘N Text in the other semifinals battle.
“We just have to play aggressive and smart. Knowing Rain or Shine, they will comeback stronger,” said the 6’4 tough forward Abueva, who averaged 15.8 points and 11.8 rebounds per game this conference. “We are ready to face them now.”
Rain or Shine’s head coach Yeng Guiao, meanwhile, believes his players would force a deciding Game 7.
“It’s still a close series. What important now is Game 6 first and we have to bring our energy there. I believe we can still make it,” he said.
